In the meantime, a few pictures from a recent trip to north Florida.
First, the Monarch butterfly migration through the St. Marks National Wildlife Reserve was right on schedule, catalyzed by a cold front to the north:

Literally thousands of them, everywhere, feeding up on pollen for their long journey ahead.


Then, over at Wakulla Springs, I got to see a Green-backed Heron for the first time:

Back in Colorado, I was surprised to see in Robert Folzenlogen's Birding Guide to the Boulder-Denver Region that these herons are sometimes summer visitors here. Will be on the lookout for them, next year!
